Why choose Edward Selfe as your Guide?

29th March 2017
Equally important as choosing your safari destination is choosing the guide who will lead your trip. I hold both of Luangwa's coveted guiding qualifications and have thousands of hours experience and knowledge of the Luangwa as a guide and photographer - I don't believe there is anyone better to lead your safari to Luangwa.

7 YEARS' GUIDING EXPERIENCE IN SOUTH LUANGWA
I am the only photographic guide living year-round in the South Luangwa National Park. I choose to make it my home, with my small family, rather than be a "fly-in expert" leading a couple of tours during the busy months. In this way, I have seen the seasons come and go and watched the park through its annual cycle of desperate dry and lush green.

SAFARI GUIDE & PHOTOGRAPHER
Many photographic safaris are led by two people: a guide and a photographer. By filling both of those roles, I am able to read animals' behaviour and position the vehicle accordingly without having to communicate this to a driver/guide. This is particularly important in a high-speed situation such as a lion hunt or wild dog sighting.

ACCOMPLISHED NATURALIST
First and foremost, my love is for the bush, its inhabitants and the pleasure of being immersed in the park's wild places. But I have built a loyal following of guests who like to be guided by a naturalist who holds both of South Luangwa's coveted guide qualifications, so can share a wealth of knowledge of the park and its subtleties, but is also a professional photographer.

INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ECOSYSTEM
After thousands of hours guiding in the National Park, my understanding of this area is personal, rather than book-based. I know many of the animals individually, having watched them on a daily basis - from birth in some cases! When I am not leading photographic safaris, I am often to be found guiding a specialist birding group or taking visitors to some of the less-well-known areas of the National Park.

PHOTO SAFARI OPTIONS FOR SINGLE PHOTOGRAPHERS
With links to all the camps in Luangwa, I am well-placed to craft a private itinerary for single photographers or small groups seeking the exclusivity that they need to prioritise their photography. With someone on the inside of the booking process, prices may also be more competitive than you would think!

ALWAYS SMALL GROUP SIZES
I think that guests on a photographic safari should have constant and direct access to their guide to ask questions when they come up. That's why I always keep my group size to a maximum of 6 (usually 4) and drive/guide at all times rather than dividing the group into two vehicles. I am also the host and your initial contact is with me so I can guide you through the booking process and answer all your queries.

15 YEARS BEHIND A CAMERA
I started taking photographs in 2000, when I bought my first film SLR. Since then, I have progressed through various cameras, settling on Canon's excellent system. I have done portraits, weddings, sports and wildlife photography, and helped hundreds of others improve their camera skills.
