Photo Safari Report: Hermann | Marula Lodge | 27 Sep - 2 Oct 2015
04th October 2015 - 2 comments

I have taken several bookings this year for individual photographers wanting a private safari where they can concentrate on their own photography with my assistance. I can arrange safaris for single photographers at very competitive rates - if you are interested in this, please get in touch for rates. Like Hermann was, you might well be surprised!

Wildlife: Luangwa sightings | September
23rd September 2015 - 3 comments

September is a stunning time in the Luangwa. The lagoons are all dry, the river is the only source of water and the game is abundant along the remaining waterways. Dusty conditions filter the light leaving soft golden sunshine in the morning and evening, and the nights are still cool enough to sleep. September is a good compromise between great sightings and tolerable temperatures.

Photo Safari: Serge & Juliette | Nkhonzi Camp | August 2015
28th August 2015 - 1 comment

I have just come out of the bush after a 2 night photo safari with Serge and his daughter, Juliette, from Marseilles in France. 2 nights is not long to spend at a camp (they had several other nights at other camps too) but it's amazing to look back and see what can be achieved in a short time in the Luangwa!

Wildlife: An update from the last couple of weeks
14th August 2015 - 0 comments

July & August are traditionally the busiest time for safari in the South Luangwa. This year has been something of an exception (mainly due to the Ebola threat which has thankfully been contained and not spread continent-wide as some feared) and bookings have been quieter for most. Not for us however - we have had a busy year despite it being our first in the new camp, Nkhonzi.

Wildlife: Sightings along the Luwi River
06th August 2015 - 0 comments

For a bit of variety, we occasionally lead some walking and driven safaris along the central section of the Luwi River, a sandy tributary of the Luangwa. It is a mostly grassland-floodplain habitat with bands of mopane scrub in between the dambos, and stands of Red Mahogany and Matuvi along the waterways.

Wildlife: An all-day safari from Nkhonzi Camp
02nd August 2015 - 0 comments

Since the beginning of the season, I have been operating almost full time out of Nkhonzi Camp, a small bushcamp set deep in the heart of the South Luangwa National Park. It has been a privilege to work from such a camp where our nearest neighbour is another very small bushcamp, nearly 10km to the north. It's turned out to be a stunning location for photography too, which is not necessarily what we expected!

Wildlife: An update
01st July 2015 - 0 comments

I've been very busy with weddings and camp photo shoots, but I always find time for some wildlife photography in between. There is nothing more relaxing for me that being out with my camera and especially when I find a group of bull elephants in the early morning!

Photoshoots: New River House at Flatdogs Camp
12th June 2015 - 0 comments

Flatdogs Camp - one of the operators that I use for my safaris - have recently finished a brand new house called the Crocodile Nest. It's right on the river, with its own pool and stunning views. They asked me to do some photos for their website and marketing. Here is a small selection.

Photo Safari: Alessandro and Co | Jackalberry Safaris | 12 - 19 Apr 2015
01st May 2015 - 0 comments

Last month (sorry for the delay in posting this!) we hosted a group of Italian photographers with Jackalberry Safaris. We spent 6 days in the bush, including 5 all-day safaris, and had some fantastic photo opportunities. The weather was a bit changeable with rain on two of the nights, but the cloudy days meant that we could take photos much later in the morning than we would have done on a sunny day.

Wildlife: A mixed weekend...
08th March 2015 - 0 comments

We always take Sukey in the bush at the weekends as she loves the open-topped vehicle and having the chance to gawp at "enners" (elephants!) always makes her happy. I always take my camera (you never know what you'll find!) and this weekend was no exception.

Wildlife: Lions in our Garden...
02nd March 2015 - 0 comments

I have often seen lion foot prints outside our house in the mornings - 2 large sets belonging to the pride's females and then the marks of the 3 cubs following behind. It was not surprise then, that on Saturday morning we found that the pride had killed a giraffe during the night, only 300 yards from our house.

Wildlife: A long absence
23rd February 2015 - 0 comments

After a long break in the UK, I am very happy to be back in the bush with my family. The frequent rains and humidity are making trips into the National Park and early-morning-only event, but I managed to get out yesterday morning and found a paradise of fresh green growth and fat, healthy mammals! There are also a lot of insects around which is great for the birds and small mammals, but not so good for humans driving without windscreens!

Wildlife: Aggressively green....
12th January 2015 - 0 comments

In the early rains, the grass is the first to grow, shooting up and covering the park in a lush green carpet. But it's almost too green for taking photos as the brightness of the grass detracts from the subject. With this in mind, I took some shots over the weekend to illustrate.....

Equipment Info: Keeping busy in the rains....
07th January 2015 - 0 comments

Without back to back safaris to keep me occupied, I have been keeping busy in other ways over the last few months. A quick holiday, a trip to UK for my brother's Sandhurst parade, lots of marketing work for ESPS Safaris and my photo safaris and now I am helping out with some building and maintenance with a local company where I have done photo work in the past.
