TOUR SUMMARY:

This phots safari takes place at the very end of the dry season, at a time when all wild creatures are compressed along the dwindling river, where water and minimal forage can be found. During these times, animals are forced together in ways that they would naturally avoid, so clashes between predators, and competition between large mammals is commonplace. With no vegetation cover on any of the shrubs, visibility and game viewing are at their most predictable.

We have chosen Mfuwe Lodge, a beautiful camp in a prime location for exploring the rich central zone of the South Luangwa National Park. Using a base inside the National Park allows us to leave camp early in the morning and make the best of the valuable period before the days heat up; this safari takes place at the hottest times of the year, but sightings will more than make up for that.

I am working with Pinto Africa for this safari. They are a well-known Austrian Tour Operator who have first-hand experience of Luangwa. The group will be guided by me, in collaboration with Danijel Jovanovic, a photographer and tour leader from Innsbruck, Austria.

Edward knew the terrain, the animals behaviours and positioned the vehicle with the perfect photographic angles. He accommodated all the group's diverse range of photographic competencies and equipment. I understand my camera much better now!

SAFARI HIGHLIGHTS

Predators at their Best
With so few sources of water to quench their thirst, prey species' movements to and from the remaining waterholes become very predictable. Predators capitalise on this seasonal glut and occasionally clash over feeding rights.

Prey species in huge densities
Responding to the seasonal squeeze, and seeking protection from predators, buffalo, elephant and antelope throng together in large herds. Nutritional pressure is very high at this time of year, and some sightings will be hard to watch.

Stunning Skies and dramatic light
In the lead-up to the rains, the cloud banks start to form developing into impressive sunsets. Evening sunlight against the gun-metal grey skies creates extraordinary lighting conditions as everyone waits for rain.

Hippos Throng the Waterholes
Requiring water to keep cool, hippos squeeze into whatever space remains. Hungry and grumpy, expect drama as these behemoths seek out a living space for themselves. Some don't make it through this challenging time and become nourishment for attendant crocodiles.

THE CAMP:

Mfuwe Lodge
Set inside the park, in the heart of the central game-viewing area, Mfuwe Lodge's allure is instantly obvious. Beneath a canopy of ebony and mahogany, its thatched buildings are arranged around the banks of a sublime lagoon where an endless stream of wildlife will keep you entertained as you lounge on the open deck or take a dip in the swimming pool. Thanks to a thorough refurbishment in 2010 the airy interior of the lodge is an exquisite complement to its natural surroundings. The rooms are equipped with A/C which may be preferred at this hot time of the year.

A sublime environment, helpful welcoming staff. The game drive, awesome!!! I have stayed at the Lodge on my many visits to the South Luangwa National Park, and every time I am truly pleased with the service.
