Unusual leopard situation
05th June 2014 - 0 comments

While out in the bush with my parents recently, we came across a situation of 4 leopards in one place. I had only my 500mm lens so didn't manage to get a photo of all 4, but my father did. The strange thing was that the mother with her two cubs was joined by her 3 year old male cub from her last litter.

From our house, we have a stunning view over a drying lagoon. A few days ago, one of the females in a family which regularly pass through came into oestrus. Males from all around showed up and began pursuing her around the place.

I have managed to find some time to get out and about with my camera while there's been some lovely weather in this country. I was out with my Dad last week and we had a fantastic evening; it all happened quite late in the evening, so the light was poor.

Wildlife: Hunting techniques of African Harrier Hawk
06th January 2014 - 0 comments

The Gymnogene (or Harrier Hawk) is odd among the raptors because it doesn't conform to the normal stereotype for a bird of prey. Slightly scrawny, with a small bill, and long gangly legs, it doesn't look much of a threat to anyone.

Wildlife: Beautiful Cranes

Christmas feels a little different here in the Luangwa. Hot and sweaty is the order of the day, with the high chance of rain being the only similarity with a UK Christmas.

Wildlife: The rains....
20th December 2013 - 0 comments

I took a nice drive in the park a few days ago and was pleased to see that there's still plenty of game around. Traditionally, people think that animals move away in the rains, because they don't need to access water at the river, but in fact, many are territorial so stay around all year.

Wildlife: Stroppy Bull

You would think that with all the nice new grass around, the elephants would be content to feed and not pay much attention to anything else. Not so with this young bull who showed considerable bravado and aggression towards me when I tried to take his picture.

There's a small spring nearby where many animals drink when there's no other water around. A couple of hippos made it their home this year as well, but recently one of them succumbed to the lack of nutrition and died in the lagoon surrounding the spring.
